Tracing fossil history.

چکیده
The dynamic nature of the master calcium signaling protein, calmodulin, schematically illustrated by snapshots from an interpolation between its calcium-bound state (blue) and its structure bound to both calcium and a peptide derived from one of its downstream cellular targets, myosin light chain kinase (red), generated using the Yale Morph Server and PyMol software. See the special section beginning on page 197.

Quantitative palaeobiogeography: GIS, phylogenetic biogeographical analysis, and conservation insights
Palaeobiogeography is the study of biogeography in the fossil record and pursues as an overall goal tracing the coevolution of the Earth and its biota (Lieberman, 2005). Reconstructing the biogeographical ranges and examining the distribution of fossil organisms has long been an important area of palaeontological research. For example, the recognition that fossils of Mesosaurus, a freshwater re...
متن کاملReviving Fossil Radio Plasma in Clusters of Galaxies by Adiabatic Compression in Environmental Shock Waves
We give for a plasma with a history of several expansion and contraction phases an analytical model of the evolution of a contained relativistic electron population under synchrotron, inverse Compton and adiabatic energy losses or gains. This is applied to different scenarios for evolution of radio plasma inside the cocoons of radio galaxies, after the activity of the central engine has ceased....
متن کاملEvolution in fossil lineages: paleontology and The Origin of Species.
Of all of the sources of evidence for evolution by natural selection, perhaps the most problematic for Darwin was the geological record of organic change. In response to the absence of species-level transformations in the fossil record, Darwin argued that the fossil record was too incomplete, too biased, and too poorly known to provide strong evidence against his theory. Here, this view of the ...
متن کاملWormholes record species history in space and time.
Genetic and fossil data often lack the spatial and temporal precision for tracing the recent biogeographic history of species. Data with finer resolution are needed for studying distributional changes during modern human history. Here, I show that printed wormholes in rare books and artwork are trace fossils of wood-boring species with unusually accurate locations and dates. Analyses of wormhol...
متن کاملAre Cluster Radio Relics Revived Fossil Radio Cocoons?
A new model for the, so called, cluster radio relics is presented (Enßlin & Gopal-Krishna 2000). Fossil radio cocoons, resulting from the former activity of radio galaxies, should contain a low energy relativistic electron population and magnetic fields. Electrons with an age of even up to 2 Gyr can be re-accelerated adiabatically to radio emitting energies, if the fossil radio plasma gets comp...
